Heavy rain and its impact:
Heavy rains on Sunday led to waterlogging in Mumbai, long traffic jams and disruptions in local train services and flight operations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rains in Mumbai on July 8.
Heavy rains continued in Dindoshi area of Mumbai on Monday morning, leading to waterlogging in several places.
The IMD has predicted heavy rains in Maharashtra for the next three to four days.
Damages and disruptions:
Heavy rains in Mumbai and its adjoining areas in the last 24 hours led to widespread waterlogging and disruptions in suburban train services.
Some city areas received over 300 mm of rain in six hours between 1 am and 7 am.
An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and the Konkan region.
Over 50 flights have been cancelled and several airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status.
Impact on social and public services:
All government, private, and municipal schools and colleges have been closed.
Trains have been diverted, rescheduled, or terminated due to waterlogging in various areas of Mumbai.
The trackside was damaged due to heavy rains and flash floods between 3 am and 6 am in the Vasind-Khardi section.
Rescue operations:
Several NDRF teams have been deployed in Thane, Vasai (Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sindhudurg.
The NDRF has rescued 49 people from a submerged resort in Thane and 16 villagers in Palghar.
Weather warnings and government measures:
The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai till 1 pm on Tuesday.
A red alert has also been issued for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts and an orange alert for Palghar and Thane.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools and colleges will remain closed on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
Why does Mumbai receive such heavy rainfall?
Monsoon: Mumbai is hit by the southwest monsoon from June to September. During the monsoon, moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea bring heavy rains to Mumbai and coastal areas of Maharashtra.
