India at Paris Olympics 2024
Day 1 of Paris Olympics 2024: The Games Have Begun
After a spectacular and riveting opening ceremony, the 33rd Olympic Games began in Paris. If you support Team India, it’s all about the fun and romance. For Day 1, several Indian stars are in action in shooting, badminton, tennis, hockey, boxing, and other sports.
In the men’s single sculls heat 1, rower Balraj Panwar put in a valiant effort to finish fourth and make it to the repechage round.,
But their performance was very disappointing as they could not make it to the top four and were eliminated.
Ramita and Arjun Babuta finished 6th, and Elavenil Valarivan and Sandeep Singh finished 12th in the qualification event.
Sarabjot Singh and Arjun Singh Cheema also failed to make it to the top eight in the 10m air pistol men’s qualification round.
The first part of the first day was more focused on shooting, but the second part will be a mix of different sports.
HS Prannoy and doubles team Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Reddy will try to give Indian badminton a good start, followed by the men’s hockey team.
India’s biggest athlete Rohan Bopanna and his partner N Sriram Balaji will play the first round of men’s doubles along with France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Fabien Reboul.
Traditionally, shooting was not considered India’s favorite sport at the Olympics. India last won a medal in shooting at London 2012 and this is the perfect time to start in Paris.
The men’s hockey team is playing its first Pool B match against New Zealand.
In badminton, Lakshya will face Kevin Cordon in his men’s singles group match while the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will take on France’s Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar.
Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto will face Korea’s So Yeong and Kong Hee Yon.
Preeti Pawar will face Vietnam’s Kim Anh Vo with her uppercuts and jabs in the Women’s 54kg opening round bout.
Panwar Balraj will represent India in the Men’s singles category.
India has sent a strong 117-member team to the Olympics, who are hoping to perform better than the 7 medals they won at the Tokyo Games.
Medals expected from these sports and players:
Neeraj Chopra, Manu Bhaker, Lakshya Sen, PV Sindhu, men’s hockey team, Vinesh Phogat, and Nikhat Zareen are India’s brightest medal hopes.
Pugilist Lovlina Borgohain and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu are also highly expected to repeat their Tokyo performance and win their second consecutive medal, becoming the second Indian to win two consecutive Olympics medals along with PV Sindhu.
Badminton:
India has been winning medals in badminton continuously since 2012 London Games.
Wrestling is also a strong sport for India in Olympics and has brought the second most Olympic medals for India after hockey. But, this sport is suffering due to problems outside the game. Players like Sakshi Malik are not part of the team and are doing commentary.
